A lawsuit is initiated in a California state court (known as Superior Court) by the filing a summons and complaint (and other required documents) with the clerk of court for the county that is appropriate venue for resolving the dispute based on the location of the parties and/or the nature of the dispute (for example, Los Angeles Superior Court for a breach of contract claim involving parties that all reside in Los Angeles County).
